Tuning the KTM 990 Duke or RC-R? Why the Bosch MG1 is currently not possible

A number of current KTM models cannot currently be tuned via software optimization – including the 125 and 390 DUKE as well as the RC 125 and RC 390 from model year 2022 onwards, all DUKE and Adventure models from 2025 onwards, and the 990 DUKE and 990 RC R. The reason is the installed engine control unit: KTM is using the current Bosch MG1 generation, for which Bosch has implemented new security mechanisms. Currently, no tool available on the market can read or write to these control units – neither ours nor those of other providers. We are already working on a solution.

Which KTM models are affected?

All models equipped with the current Bosch MG1 generation are affected:

• KTM 125 DUKE from model year 2022
• KTM 390 DUKE from model year 2022
• KTM RC 125 from model year 2022
• KTM RC 390 from model year 2022
• KTM DUKE models from model year 2025
• KTM Adventure models from model year 2025
• KTM 990 DUKE
• KTM 990 RC R

What is the Bosch MG1 control unit?

MG1 is the current control unit platform from Bosch and is used in many modern vehicles. It controls injection, ignition, the throttle valve, and numerous assistance functions. Compared to older generations, the platform is significantly more powerful – and much more heavily protected against software modifications.

Why can't the new MG1 generation be flashed?

For any software optimization, the control unit must first be read and then written to with the adjusted software. This is precisely the access that Bosch has prevented in the current MG1 generation through new security mechanisms. The previously known access methods no longer work here, and no tool on the market can currently read or write these control units.

This affects the entire industry, not just individual providers. As long as there is no access to the software, a serious, individually tuned optimization is not possible.

Is FLAWLESS working on a solution?

Yes. We develop our software optimizations in-house and are already working on gaining access to the current MG1 generation. We cannot provide a binding date yet. As soon as an optimization is available for the affected models, you will find it in our shop and in our news section.

What should you look out for regarding tuning offers for these models?

If someone offers you software optimization for one of the affected models today, it is worth asking exactly how this is implemented. Additional modules connected between sensors and the control unit do not change the software in the control unit itself – they are fundamentally different from a flash, where injection, ignition, and throttle valve mapping are adjusted directly within the engine management.

Can the KTM 990 DUKE be tuned?

Software optimization is currently not possible, as the installed Bosch MG1 control unit cannot be read or written to by any tool at this time. We are working on a solution.

Is there a Performance Flash for the 125 DUKE or 390 DUKE from 2022?

Not yet. With the model generation from 2022, KTM switched to the current Bosch MG1 generation for the 125 DUKE and 390 DUKE. For model years up to 2021, the FLAWLESS ECU Performance Flash remains available.

Is there a Performance Flash for the RC 125 or RC 390 from 2022?

Not yet. The current Bosch MG1 generation is also installed in the RC 125 and RC 390 from model year 2022. For model years up to 2021, you can find the appropriate optimization in our KTM RC collection.

Can I have my KTM Adventure from 2025 optimized?

No, the new control unit generation is also installed in the Adventure models from model year 2025. You can find optimizations for older model years in our KTM Adventure collection.

Is there a Performance Flash for the 990 RC R?

Not yet. The 990 RC R also uses the current Bosch MG1 generation and is therefore currently not optimizable.

Can I have my 790 DUKE or 890 DUKE from 2025 optimized?

No, the new control unit generation is installed in these models from model year 2025 as well. For model years up to 2024, the FLAWLESS ECU Performance Flash remains available.

How do I know if my KTM is affected?

The model and model year are the deciding factors. If you are unsure, send us your model, model year, and vehicle identification number (VIN) – we will tell you if optimization is possible.

When will there be a solution for Bosch MG1?

There is no binding date yet. We are actively working on it and will release new optimizations as soon as they function reliably.
