The two models differ in their injection system: in TPI, the injectors are located in the transfer ports, whereas in TBI, they are in the throttle body. TBI was introduced with the newer model years, while TPI is found on the older models. Both systems use different engine control units, which is why there is a specifically developed optimization for both TPI and TBI.
